Area Agencies on Aging – Alabama

Overview

In Alabama, the Department of Senior Services (ADSS) oversees the state’s aging programs. ADSS collaborates with 13 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), each serving specific regions within the state. These AAAs are often part of Regional Planning Commissions and are responsible for planning and delivering services tailored to their communities. For instance, the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission’s AAA serves Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia counties, offering programs like home-delivered meals, caregiver support, and legal assistance.

Each AAA in Alabama houses an Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC), known collectively as “One Door Alabama.” These centers provide free information, counseling, and access to several programs and services, being as the primary point of contact for aging, disability, and caregiver inquiries.

How They Work and What They Do

Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) play an important role in helping older adults live independently by connecting them to essential services. While Alabama’s AAAs share a similar structure with those in other states, they also have unique aspects that reflect the needs of local communities.

How AAAs Are Organized in Alabama

Alabama is divided into 13 regions, known as Planning and Service Areas (PSAs), each served by an AAA. These agencies are either non-profits or government organizations designated by the state to support older adults in their region.

What AAAs Do

  • Planning for Local Needs: Each AAA develops a plan to assess the needs of older adults in its area and outlines strategies to provide services.
  • Connecting Seniors to Services: AAAs serve as a go-to resource, helping older adults access programs like transportation, meal delivery, home care, and senior centers.
  • Providing Direct Support: Some AAAs offer services directly, such as home care assistance, nutrition programs, and transportation options.
  • Advocating for Older Adults: These agencies also push for policies and programs at the local and state levels that improve the quality of life for seniors.

By working within their communities, Alabama’s AAAs ensure older adults get the support they need to live safely and independently.
