Find your city's housing authority, check if the list is open, and go straight to the official page — updated May 2, 2026.
What the labels mean
| Label | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Open / apply now | The official page says you can submit an application or pre-application now. | Apply through the official link. Save login details and confirmation numbers. |
| Opening soon | The housing authority has announced a future application window. | Prepare documents now. Apply during the exact window. |
| Closed / long wait | The main HCV list is closed, paused, or has a very long demand signal. | Do not wait on only one list. Check nearby PHAs and property-based options. |
| Check official page | The city/PHA match is useful, but the current HCV status needs a direct official check. | Use the official page and search for “Section 8,” “HCV,” “waiting list,” or “applicant portal.” |
How to use this page without wasting time
For seniors, disabled adults, and caregivers
This page is not senior-only because Section 8 waitlist data is usually not senior-specific. But older adults and disabled adults should look for extra paths that may matter:
- Elderly or disabled preferences on the local waiting list
- Senior public housing buildings
- Project-based voucher properties for seniors or disabled adults
- Reasonable accommodation help if disability makes the application process harder
- Local Area Agency on Aging, 211, legal aid, or housing counseling help
Why there is no reliable state-level wait time table
Most Section 8 waitlists are not run as one state list — they are managed by local public housing agencies. A city or county housing authority page is usually much more useful than a state-level page. Some states have special systems or dashboards, but even then, the local housing authority controls the actual application window, preferences, lottery rules, and applicant updates.
FAQ
Is this an exact Section 8 wait time calculator?
No. Exact Section 8 wait times are controlled locally and can change quickly. This checker shows waitlist signals, official links, and plain-English next steps.
Why is this page organized by city instead of state?
Most Section 8 waiting lists are run by local public housing agencies, not one statewide list. City and county housing authorities usually give better information than state-level pages.
What does “open lottery” mean?
It means you can usually submit a pre-application, but being selected is not guaranteed. Some agencies choose names randomly when vouchers become available.
What should I do if my city is closed?
Check nearby housing authorities, public housing, project-based voucher properties, local affordable housing lists, and emergency housing resources if you are unsafe or at risk of homelessness.
Is this page only for seniors?
No. Section 8 waitlist data is not senior-only. Seniors and disabled adults should still look for elderly/disabled preferences, senior public housing, and reasonable accommodations.
Data methodology
Data version: v1, first compiled and last verified on 2 May 2026. This is a city-level waitlist checker, not a government database and not an exact wait-time calculator.
The 100 largest U.S. cities were drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 population estimates. Each city was matched to the main public housing agency using HUD’s Public Housing Agency inventory. Status labels reflect the clearest official information found for each housing authority as of the last verified date. When the source was unclear, this checker marks the row “Check official page” rather than guessing.
Exact Section 8 wait times are not published in one national list. Federal rules (see 24 CFR 982.204) require each PHA to administer its own waiting list, so this page uses waitlist signals rather than a single national number.
Confidence levels
- High: An official PHA page, applicant portal, or public notice clearly states the current status.
- Medium: The right housing authority is identified but some details require a portal check or more recent confirmation.
- Low: The city/PHA match is a starting point; needs a fresh official review before treating the status as complete.
HUD data used for context
HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Data Dashboard and Public Housing Data Dashboard provide budget, leasing, and occupancy data at the PHA level. These are useful for context but local PHA pages still control the current application status shown to readers.
