Estimate care costs in your area

Choose a state, metro area, and type of care. This tool uses median costs, not a quote from a provider.

Choose “state average” if your area is not listed.
Only used for help at home. The full-time benchmark is also shown.
Use Social Security, pension, retirement income, or family contribution.
About this tool: This tool uses the uploaded state and metro-area cost-of-care workbook based on 2025 long-term care cost data. It gives a planning estimate only. It does not show provider quotes, live availability, Medicaid eligibility, or approval for any program. No information is saved by this static page.

How to use this result

Care costs can be hard to compare because each setting charges in a different way. Home care is often priced by the hour. Adult day care is often priced by the day. Assisted living and nursing home care are usually discussed as monthly or yearly costs. This calculator puts the numbers into a simple monthly and annual view so families can compare options.

The number you see is a median cost. That means actual prices near you may be lower or higher. A provider may also charge extra for medication help, memory care, transportation, meals, incontinence supplies, or higher levels of care. Always ask for a written price sheet before you sign anything.

Good next steps

  • If care costs more than income: Ask your Area Agency on Aging about Medicaid long-term services, caregiver support, adult day care, home-delivered meals, respite care, and transportation help.
  • If nursing home care may be needed: Ask your state Medicaid office about long-term care Medicaid rules. Medicare usually does not pay for long-term custodial nursing home care.
  • If care is needed at home: Compare paid caregiver hours with adult day care, family respite, Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services, and local nonprofit programs.
  • If the person is a veteran or surviving spouse: Ask about VA Aid and Attendance, VA home-based primary care, or other VA support before spending savings.

Documents and questions to prepare

  • Monthly income from Social Security, pension, retirement accounts, or family support
  • Savings, bank accounts, and insurance information
  • Current care needs, such as bathing, dressing, meals, memory care, medication help, or transportation
  • Doctor notes, hospital discharge papers, or care assessment documents
  • Questions about what is included in the monthly price and what costs extra

Cost data is based on the uploaded state and metro-area workbook. The underlying survey source is the CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey. CareScout says its 2025 survey collected rates from long-term care providers across the country and reports median costs by care setting and location. You can compare the public source at CareScout costs and read the survey methodology. For local support, use the Eldercare Locator, Medicaid LTSS, and VA Aid and Attendance.
