Apply at your state SNAP office or online. Mention you are 60+ for a simplified application. Allow up to 30 days (7 days if in need urgently).
3
Week 3 — Medicaid (if not automatic)
Often the same application as Medicare Savings. Your state Medicaid office can confirm. Allow 45–90 days.
4
Week 4 — LIHEAP, Part D Extra Help, Others
Part D Extra Help: apply at ssa.gov. LIHEAP: contact your local community action agency or dial 211.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't assume you don't qualify. Many seniors miss benefits because they think they earn too much. Apply even if you're unsure — income disregards often help.
  • Don't forget the $20 income disregard for Medicare Savings Programs. SSA subtracts $20/month from your income before comparing to the limit.
  • Don't count excluded assets. Your primary home, one car, and burial funds typically do NOT count toward asset limits for most programs.
  • Don't apply for just one program. Most seniors qualify for several at once. Approval for one does not affect another.
  • Don't pay anyone to apply. All legitimate federal benefit programs are free. If someone charges you, walk away.
  • Do appeal if denied. Many denials are due to paperwork errors. You usually have 60–90 days to appeal. A SHIP counselor or legal aid office can help for free.
  • Do report income changes promptly (usually within 10 days). This protects you from overpayment notices later.
  • Do mark renewal dates in your calendar. Benefits don't renew automatically — missing a redetermination can cut off your benefits unexpectedly.
