About this tool: This tool gives a starting point only. It does not decide eligibility, approve benefits, show live vacancies, or replace official agency rules. Program rules, funding, waitlists, and application dates can change. Always confirm details with the official agency before applying. No information is saved by this static page.

How this tool helps

Senior housing help is not one program. Some seniors need emergency rent help today. Others need a long-term rent subsidy, senior apartment, public housing, Section 202 property, project-based voucher, LIHTC apartment, nonprofit housing, or veteran housing help. This tool sorts those paths by income, urgency, veteran status, rural area, and housing need.

Many subsidized housing programs use rent based on income, but the final amount can depend on adjusted income, deductions, utility allowances, payment standards, minimum rent, and local housing authority rules. This tool gives realistic starting points, not a voucher calculation.

What to do first

  • Eviction or court date: Call legal aid and 211 right away.
  • Need long-term lower rent: Apply to more than one housing authority and property waitlist.
  • Age 62 or older: Search Section 202 and senior-designated public housing.
  • Veteran: Contact VA homeless services or ask about HUD-VASH and SSVF.

Reality checks

Housing waitlists can be long. Some lists are closed. A project-based voucher building may have a different waitlist from the Housing Choice Voucher list. A senior should not wait for one list only. Apply broadly, update your contact information, and respond to every waitlist letter quickly.

Documents to gather

Bring photo ID, Social Security numbers, income proof, rent amount, landlord contact information, eviction papers if any, disability documents if requesting accommodation, and veteran documents if relevant.
